eQualed

FAQ

Do I need to create an account?
No. Opening the app sets you up as a guest automatically — no email or password. You can optionally link Sign in with Apple or Google later from Account → Keep your groups, which just means your groups survive a reinstall or a new device.

Do my friends need an account to join a group?
No. They open your invite link, pick their name (or claim the seat you already added for them), and they're in. Same guest setup as you — no sign-up for anyone.

Can I add an expense for someone who hasn't joined yet?
Yes. Add them as a placeholder from the group screen — their name shows up in balances right away, and they claim that seat whenever they open the invite link.

Does eQualed move money between us?
No. eQualed only tracks who owes what. When you settle up, it shows a short plan to even everyone out, fewer payments than there are people, with a link to pay through whatever app someone already uses (PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Monzo or Revolut) if they've added one. You mark it as paid once it's sent.

What happens if I reinstall the app or switch phones?
If you're still a guest (no Apple/Google linked), a reinstall can lose access to your groups, since a guest account is tied to that device. Link an account beforehand from Account → Keep your groups to avoid this.

Can I split expenses in different currencies?
Yes. Enter an expense in any currency and eQualed locks the exchange rate at that moment, so your group's balances don't drift later if rates move. More in our guide to splitting trip expenses in different currencies.

Can I just type what happened?
Yes. In the note, write it the way you'd say it — "Sam paid 45 for dinner last night" — and eQualed fills in who paid, how much and when. You can change anything before you save.

Can I scan a receipt?
Yes. Tap Scan receipt when adding an expense, then take a photo or choose one. eQualed reads the amount, date and a category guess for you to check. The photo is read by an AI model (Google's Gemini, or Anthropic's Claude as a backup, through OpenRouter) and is not kept; without a connection it's read on your phone instead.

Can more than one person have paid?
Yes. Tap the two-person icon next to Paid and enter what each person put in. It has to add up to the total.

Does it work without a signal?
Partly. In a group you've already opened, you can add an expense with no signal: it's kept on your phone, shows as "Waiting to send", and goes through when you're back online. Editing or deleting expenses, settling up, joining a group and changing settings need a connection.

Why does it say beta?
eQualed is new and still being tested with real groups on TestFlight. It's free to use, and if something doesn't work, tell us at support@equaled.app.

Can an expense repeat?
Yes. Set it to repeat weekly or monthly when you add it, for rent or a subscription. You can stop it from the group's settings, and what it already posted stays.

Can I see where the money went, or get it out?
Each group has a Summary showing spending by category and by month, and what each person paid against their share. Once a group has a few expenses you can search them. From the group's settings you can export everything as a spreadsheet.

Can I edit or delete an expense after adding it?
Yes, while the group is open. Any member can edit or delete an expense; balances update immediately for everyone.

What happens when a trip or group is done?
Settle up, then close the group. Closing stops new expenses but keeps balances and history visible, and you can reopen it anytime.

Who can see our group's expenses?
Only the people in that group. See the privacy policy for details on what's collected and how it's stored.

What does eQualed cost?
It's free to use. If that ever changes, your groups and data stay yours either way.
