How to split an Airbnb or rental fairly when people stay different nights

The short answer: count the nights each person stayed, add them up, and divide the total cost by that number to get a price per person per night. Each person pays that price times their nights. Someone who stayed two nights pays for two nights, not for the whole trip.

Why an equal split doesn't work

Say four friends rent a place for five nights for $1,000. Ana and Ben are there all five nights, Cara arrives two days late and stays three, and Dev only makes the last two. Split equally, everyone pays $250, so Dev pays $125 a night while Ana pays $50. That's the argument you're trying to avoid.

Method 1: by person-nights (simplest)

Add up every night each person stayed: 5 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 15 person-nights. The price per person per night is $1,000 ÷ 15 = $66.67. Everyone pays the same rate for each night they were there.

PersonNightsPaysEqual split would be
Ana5$333.34$250.00
Ben5$333.33$250.00
Cara3$200.00$250.00
Dev2$133.33$250.00
Total15$1,000.00$1,000.00

$1,000 doesn't divide exactly by 15, so one person pays the leftover cent and the total still comes to exactly $1,000.

Method 2: night by night

Divide the cost into nights ($1,000 ÷ 5 = $200 a night), then split each night among whoever was there that night. Cara stays nights 3 to 5 and Dev nights 4 and 5.

NightWho was thereEach pays
1Ana, Ben$100.00
2Ana, Ben$100.00
3Ana, Ben, Cara$66.67
4Ana, Ben, Cara, Dev$50.00
5Ana, Ben, Cara, Dev$50.00

That comes to about $366.67 each for Ana and Ben, $166.67 for Cara and $100.00 for Dev. The early arrivals pay more, because for the first nights they had the whole place between two people.

Which one is fairer?

Both are fair; they answer different questions. Person-nights says "a bed for a night costs the same for everyone", which suits a shared house or a hotel with a room each. Night by night says "whoever is there covers the place that night", which suits a rental that costs the same whether two people or six stay. If you can't decide, person-nights is easier to explain and to check, so it's the one most groups pick. Agree on it before the trip, not after.

Common questions

What about the cleaning fee and service fees?
They don't depend on how long anyone stays, so most groups split them equally among everyone who stayed at least one night. Add them as a separate expense.

Someone slept on the sofa. Should they pay less?
If the group agrees, give them a smaller weight: count a sofa night as half a night, for example. The same arithmetic works with any weights.

What if one person paid for the whole booking?
Work out everyone's share as above. Everyone else pays the booker their share, and the booker's own share is what they've already covered.

Does this work for rent in a shared flat?
Yes. Use days or weeks instead of nights, for example when a flatmate moves in halfway through the month.
